Most of us know cork from wine bottles or deco-bottles as the little plug that keeps the liquid fresh inside the container or bottle and some people may know cork from flooring. Many people have changed over to cork flooring knowing that is very sustainable as well as last a great while as well, but where did cork come from and why has it been used in shoes anymore.
Cork comes straight from a tree called the Cork Tree (Quercus Suber) that grows mainly in Spain and Portugal. Many cork trees can grow for over one hundred years or more. The cork is produced underneath the bark of the tree and it carefully removed and dried and cut into shapes for the wine bottle, flooring, shoe soles, etc. And as any of us know, cork tops help keep oxygen from reaching the wine inside the bottle, but how durable is it in a shoe?
Companies such as Steve Madden Shoes have used cork on many of their platform heels, because mainly, it is one of the most durable, natural materials that a shoes and upper could be made out of. You can find these shoes in a price range from about $80- $200 depending on what style and size you are in the market for.
There are other companies such as Christian Louboutin That make a platform, functional heel with the entire material of cork. Wears of this heel sate that it goes above and beyond comfort when they have worn the heel all day.
If you are in the market to find that one of a kind heel that screams classy but original, check out some shoes made from cork. They are all the bit environmentally friendly with a flare of distinction.
